Nov 2021 the Council decided that Paisley would not compete for city status in the Queen Elizabeth II jubilee and we think that was a massive mistake – to say that Paisley status as Scotlands largest town was its greatest benefit is a nonsense and we want to put that straight when the King Charles III opportunity comes along – We’re asking everyone from Paisley to sign up FREE to our campaign and show your support.
In 1998 the Council's view was. "No Scottish city has been created since Dundee in 1889. - It is right that with the new millennium upon us, Paisley should become Scotland's first new city in over 100 years.''
''If Paisley was to win its bid for city status the economic benefits from business investment and increased levels of tourism, will help generate employment and raise Paisley's profile throughout the world.''
Then came the shock decision, a complete (U-turn) that flew in the face of general consensus. Paisley was better-off remaining as a town. - Forget economic benefits, business investment, the increase in tourism and the additional employment.
This was not the view of the people. The town was full of expectancy, community spirit was higher than it had been for decades, there was excitement and sense of pride. - For RDC to arbitrarily decide that Paisley's USP was to remain a town without referring to the people had no legitimacy.
In 2002 when we wanted to become the 'millenium city' Inverness was chosen over us, and it prospered. Similarly Perth became a city in 2012 and it has prospered.
Dunfermline then became a city in 2022 because Renfrewshire Council FAILED to put us forward when it could have been us!
While these new cities have attractions, none have the history and or the industrial heritage that Paisley has. - So let's all work together to ensure Paisley becomes Scotland's 8th city.
Let's make sure - that this time - It is our turn.
City of Culture lasts ONE year.
A City is FOREVER!
